The 2017 Consumer Electrics Show (CES) is the perfect place for companies to showcase new visions for future mobility and this year has proven to be no different. This year, Hyundai Motor unveiled a suite of interactive demonstrations. At their booth at CES, they had an immersive virtual reality section. This experience made it possible for others to see the future vision that they have for the company and the autonomous driving experience that the company is working on.

While the booth at CES is very cool, Hyundai is taking it one step further and their advanced autonomous IONIQ models, which is exactly what they unveiled, will operate on surrounding roads in Las Vegas as a trial in urban environments. To do this, they have identified a series of test routes in the area and the autonomous IONIQ models will navigate them.

To navigate them, they are using the latest LiDAR technology. LiDAR technology is a laser and radar based detection system. Using this technology, the models will be able to precisely identify the position of any surrounding vehicles and objects. This allows the models to navigate the urban area in a safe way. Since not everyone can take part in these model tests around Las Vegas, the Virtual Reality (VR) simulators have been set up and can allow visitors to experience a immersive view of how autonomous driving will work and how it can bring a new level of convenience and safety to Hyundai drivers.

How LiDAR Technology is Being Implemented

The hardware has to go somewhere on the Hyundai vehicles but you will not see it in plain view. The auto maker has hidden the hardware behind the autonomous IONIQ's front bumper. Traditionally, other auto makers have placed similar technology on the roof but this will not work for Hyundai because they wanted to maintain their sleek vehicle design.

Hyundai has also tried to keep the operating systems very simple by integrating any existing systems with the new advances self-driving systems. This includes integrating the Smart Cruise Control system with the forward facing radar and Lane Keeping Assist cameras. To further help with the system, it also utilizes the GPS antenna to better search for the location of vehicles. There is even a high-definition mapping software that can provide even more accuracy for location, the type of road, the curvature of the vehicles and road, the width of lanes, and even indication data from other vehicles. With the integration of the Blind Spot Detection radar, you can ensure that even lane changes will be made safely.

This latest technology can really change the landscape of similar vehicles and safety on the road. It will allow vehicles to navigate even in the most extreme of situations including high levels of pedestrian traffic, road constructions, stop lights and stop signs, speed bumps, and even children or dogs in the street.
